I have an eMac. When I got it, with Mac OS X 10.2 I installed Fink and it worked fine. Then I upgraded to 10.3 and it hasn't worked properly ever since.

At first, it would crash when installing some of the GTK apps. From this list I was informed that apparently the 10.3 upgrade did not properly install the new X. So Following instructions, I re-installed X. GTK apps like Gaim did in fact compile and install, but when I ran them, they would start up and display a grey box without any text. I left it alone for a while, but my son who uses the Mac had some apps he really wanted to use.

So yesterday I tried doing a Fink upgrade but it got stuck. So instead:

1. deleted the /sw directory
2. deleted Fink prefs I found in several places, including all the hidden Unix files in his directory
3. Downloaded Fink .70 and installed

I did a source install of Gaim and it worked fine. But when I ran it, it hung for a few minutes and gave me "Bus Error" without displaying anything,

Aron, there is a FAQ about removing fink. You probably should have removed usr/X11R6 and /etc/X11 in case your X really was defective somehow.

Well I had already reinstalled X, so it seemd silly to reinstall it again. The first time I reinstalled X, it did solve the compile problem and I did get a bit further in runnng apps.

Did you install the system tools from the fourth 10.3 disk? Did you install Apple's X11 SDK along with X11 itself? When you updated to 10.3, you updated the BSD subsystem as well, right?

I installed all the X packages and dowloaded latest version of Xtools and installed that. I'm not sure what you mean about the BSD subsystem.

Good luck,
James
