Try using the --force-remove-reinstreq flag too:

(from 'man dpkg', under --force)

remove-reinstreq: Remove a package, even if it's broken and
marked to require reinstallation. This may, for example, cause
parts of the package to remain on the system, which will then be
forgotten by dpkg.

Thanks, Alex, but that doesn't work. The following is the output that I get when I issue:

dpkg --force-remove-reinstreq <package>

$ dpkg --force-remove-reinstreq postgresql-python-py23
dpkg: unknown force/refuse option `remove-reintreq'

Type dpkg --help for help about installing and deinstalling packages [*];
Use dselect for user-friendly package management;
Type dpkg -Dhelp for a list of dpkg debug flag values;
Type dpkg --force-help for a list of forcing options;
Type dpkg-deb --help for help about manipulating *.deb files;
Type dpkg --licence for copyright licence and lack of warranty (GNU GPL) [*].

Options marked [*] produce a lot of output - pipe it through `less' or `more' !
