Voila. Can't believe it was that simple. I guess my question is, why didn't this ever cause problems for me before? Not understanding that part. I have always ignored permissions on that particular volume. Hindsight says I should have changed that when I decided to put my Fink stuff there, but since I never did, I am just curious why the issue just now appeared.

If you do a "Get info" on your partition /Volumes/manx, do you perhaps have the "Ignore ownership on this volume" button checked? If yes, uncheck it.
