Makes sense to me. Thanks for the help! Should have looked a little deeper knowing it was a permissions thing anyway. Now, time to install mysql. Many questions may come once I start into it.

I think this self-testing stuff in fink is rather new. You were probably on an earlier version of fink before that didn't do these tests.
