Why not use X in rootless mode, then, and take your screen caps that way?

Thanks but no thanks.  First of all, I'm using X *full screen*, so
switching to the Finder to take a screenshot would kind of defeat
the point.  Second of all, I'm only really happy with this computer
when I can peacefully forget that I'm using OS X.  (Which means, in
particular, that I do not want keystrokes entered from within X
being passed to Aqua.)  OS X specific methods are not portable to
other platforms and typically can't be applied in shell scripts.
