Thanks but no thanks. First of all, I'm using X *full screen*, so switching to the Finder to take a screenshot would kind of defeat the point. Second of all, I'm only really happy with this computer when I can peacefully forget that I'm using OS X. (Which means, in particular, that I do not want keystrokes entered from within X being passed to Aqua.) OS X specific methods are not portable to other platforms and typically can't be applied in shell scripts.
Screen capture works just fine in full screen mode, and has nothing to do with the finder. It's accessible via the "screencapture" command. For example, "screencapture output.pdf".
Obviously that works perfectly well in shell scripts.
As for portability, AFAIK x11 methods only work under x11 so those hardly qualify as portable either. ;)
