Okay,
I'm a little confused; If there's a really simple answer---please share. I've searched the archives for an hour or so and found a little to help; but I've found no complete solution however.
I just switched from an iBook to a Powerbook G4. I ran all the software updates, installed XCode (1.2) and then installed fink. Everything "installed" okay, but I can't get all the apps to actually run.
The previous shell I used was tcsh, and now it's bash. I'm willing to learn what I need to for bash use--I checked the archives for the list and pretty much all I found was to make sure that the .profile has
. /sw/bin.init.sh
and it does; I also set my display to use X11
export DISPLAY=":0.0"

So far, you did not do anything wrong, AFAICT, despite what others said.
The startup sequence of bash is known to and respected by the Fink pathsetup script, so if it says you are OK and you don't modify startup scripts manually afterwards, you *are* OK.

and so I can launch qcad and xinvaders from Terminal.app but I cannot launch gimp and abiword. When I try fink install gimp I just get the message that there's no packages to install.

Is it installed or not? What give "fink list -i gimp" and "ls -l /sw/bin/gimp*"? There is now s tricky construction in place in order to allow several gimp versions to coexist. The "real" executables are called gimp-1.2 or gimp-2.0, and an executable named /sw/bin/gimp is installed only if you install either the gimp-default or the gimp2-default package.

Unfortunately, the gimp package maintainer has been so busy producing various gimp variants that he had no time to write decent usage instructions ;-)

When I try to run gimp I get the following:
-bash: gimp: command not found
When I try to run abiword I get nothing. No messages, just nothing. I

Are you sure you waited long enough? Starting abiword can take a *long* time, 3 minutes easily.
