perfect, that worked. thanks. here is another quick question. i have manually installed xfree86. when i wish to install programs like xdaliclock or wmweather, or some other bit of madness, fink keeps asking to install xfree86 - which is already installed. i thought the placeholder system-xfree86 would take care of that... it seemed to before, so what am i missing? dave
