of madness, fink keeps asking to install xfree86 - which is already
installed. i thought the placeholder system-xfree86 would take care of
that... it seemed to before, so what am i missing?

It sounds like you've got the old-style system-xfree86 package, which is obsolete--you need to use the new virtual package instead. Check out
