trying to reproduce your error, eg going to the fink website and downloading the Fink-0.7.0-Installer.dmg - works fine here for me. suggestions:
- you chose a mirror, right? try again chosing another one (worked for me with my local, the swiss one <http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/fink/Fink-0.7.0-Installer.dmg? use_mirror=puzzle>)
- stupid question but you have enough free space on the partition for the 16mb fink installer, no?
hope that helps

Thanks for replying mathias.
I'm a very experienced computer user, but I use unix rarely.
I have the latest OSX with the latest patches installed. Fink is not on my system right now (the command fink isn't recognized and there is no man entry for fink)..
I used SAFARI to go to the fink website and to click for the DMG download. This did not work and gave the indicated error message "cannot create file" in the download window. (it would normally load to the desktop).
How should I load all this? What is the right way to handle this?
