My understanding of the situation is that when running a rootless X server with Aqua, aqua is passing mouse and keyboard events to Apple's X11. You should leave the X11 key-map alone and just use the menu-bar item or apple+alt+spacebar to change layouts, at least thats what i do. I am not clear as to whether or not you have tried your maps with Apple's X11 but i cant see why they would be necessary for Apple's X11.

Switching the keymap in Aqua does not work with X (either nothing happens
or I get some useless mapping) so I tried to use XKB to do it.
The missing part for xkb keymap switching was the table mapping the
wierd scancodes to X keysyms which I captured by running xkbcomp on the
original keymap present in X server after startup.
I have packaged the map plus a simple script in xkbsw package (see

It does not work with Apple's X11 (at least the version I have) because
it lacks most of the XKB stuff.
Am I the only one who uses multiple keyboard maps?
Could anybody test the package so that I can claim it works on more than
one system?
