For binary-avail GUI FTP clients, I'm a big fan of "OS X Finder" and Mozilla (latest version .dmg is on mozilla.org). For CLI, I use ftp and curl. Gftp has many features, so a "good alternative" really depends on what features are most important. GUI? Multiple/batch/wildcard operations? Resume interrupted transfer?
