I don't think anyone can know this. From past experience one can only know that some programs are particularly sensitive, for example xemacs, so they should be rebuilt. Others that also depend on libXaw3d are less sensitive. This time xfig is different, it doesn't work even if it is rebuilt with the new version of xfig. However, you showed the error message
dyld: gv can't open library: /sw/lib/libXaw3d.8.dylib
This is strange. On my system, both the old and new versions of xaw3d install a library with install_name /sw/lib/libXaw3d.7.dylib.
