Exactly, it does "automatically appear", so you wouldn't need to
manually install it.

According to the FAQ item entitled:

  "What are all these system-* "virtual packages" that are sometimes
  present, but that I can't seem to install or remove myself?"

system-xfree86 is so virtual that it magically "becomes installed"
whenever the underlying software is present.
