Just to follow up...
After looking through the list archives, I tried this:
sudo apt-get install ghostscript-fonts sudo apt-get install --reinstall gnome-print
GnuCash now seems to be working.
What I don't get, though, is that I have GnuCash (installed via Fink) working on another Mac which does not have ghostscript-fonts installed. Why would it be necessary to do this on one Mac when another doesn't seem to need it?
