Did you have to configure a different HTTP proxy when you were in
Europe? At some time I configured fink to use a proxy, and then
the settings stayed even though I ran fink configure to change this
setting. The setting stayed as it was until I started X11 again.
Have you restarted your X11 since you came home?
What does 
 env | grep PROXY 
say?
