It would have been useful if you had found the time to try again and capture the exact error message. What you are telling doesn't give much hints to guess the cause of the problem.
I can't get this package to compile. Alas, I use fink commander, and I started another command before copying the error message, but it appeared after the package seemed to try to call emacs, which I do not have installed ever since it became nearly impossible to install emacs21-xaw3D.
You should have /usr/bin/emacs, in any case, which comes with the system. If not, reinstall the BSD.pkg.
