While I was exploring differences in behavior between pdflatex and
latex yesterday, I noticed an inconsistency in
/sw/var/lib/texmf/web2c/updmap.cfg
The readme for the Belleek fonts in
/sw/share/texmf-dist/doc/fonts/belleek/README states
"teTeX's default setup was changed to use the Belleek fonts instead of
the original Mathtime fonts in April 2003. So, there are no longer any
manual seps involved to activate these fonts.
..."
but the manual steps described subsequently have actually not been
carried out completely in the fink installation. In particular, I had
to run
updmap --edit
and change the config because the belleek fonts are ignored in
updmap.cfg
Then, there was another error (about a listed font, unrelated to
belleek, that wasn't in the tree) which was fixed by running
updmap --syncwithtrees
I wanted to write down that error on the third machine where I made
this modification, but on THAT machine there was no further error
message...
Without these changes, the latex --> dvipdf route gives different
results compared to the pdflatex command if you have a source with
\usepackage{mathtime} in it. I noticed this when looking at the PDF
output with Adobe Illustrator which tells you exactly what fonts you're
using (you don't see any difference using a PDF viewer).
After the updmap changes, the problem went away. Also, the problem and
fix appeared to be the same same under Tiger and Jaguar.
