If xemacs did not get updated but Xaw3d did, try rebuilding xemacs. I
had the same thing happen to me a while back, and this resolved the
issue. (You may have to rebuild some other X clients as well, like gv,
but it's safe to wait until they crash before you do.)
Meta question: why did Xaw3d change in a way that broke binary
compatibility without forcing the client apps to recompile?

Probably because the maintainers of packages that depend on it didn't
know that, so they didn't issue new revisions of their packages.
