Ah! I wonder why I actually was able to move on to the build phase...

Yes, this is truely weird. I would be interested in seeing your config.log, in particular around the line "configure:2538: checking for C compiler default output".

configure:2511: gcc -V </dev/null >&5
gcc-3.3: `-V' option must have argument
configure:2514: $? = 1
configure:2538: checking for C compiler default output
configure:2541: gcc -I/usr/X11R6/include/freetype2 -fno-coalesce -I/ sw/include -L/sw/lib conftest.c >&5
configure:2544: $? = 0
configure:2590: result: a.out
configure:2595: checking whether the C compiler works
configure:2601: ./a.out
configure:2604: $? = 0
configure:2621: result: yes

Using gcc-3.3 would explain how I was able to move on, I guess.

In any case, I did move to the build phase, only to hit a freetype- related error (I use xorg rather than Apple's X11, so that's likely to be the reason):

[]

/usr/X11R6/include/freetype2/freetype/ftoutln.h:28:2: #error "freetype.h of FreeType 1 has been loaded!" /usr/X11R6/include/freetype2/freetype/ftoutln.h:29:2: #error "Please fix the directory search order for header files" /usr/X11R6/include/freetype2/freetype/ftoutln.h:30:2: #error "so that freetype.h of FreeType 2 is found first."

For freetype, this is an exceptionally clear error message ;-)
The FAQ would recommend to look whether you have freetype | freetype-hinting installed and uninstall it. If you don't have it, one would need to find out why it thinks you have.

Oops--should have read that.

I do indeed have freetype-hinting installed. Presumably a build conflict upon freetype | freetype-hinting is in order (maintainer cc'ed)?
