Here's what I found that's suspicious:
/sw/var/lib/fink/path-prefix-g++-3.3 hansen$ ls -la
total 8

drwxr-xr-x 12 root admin 408 Aug 4 09:48 ..
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 3 Aug 1 15:50 c++ -> g++
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 3 Apr 25 15:22 ccc -> gcc
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 138 Aug 1 09:06 g++
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 28 Apr 25 15:22 gcc
The ccc and gcc entries are much older, and not in the dpkg
database. I'll mvoe them out of the way and try again.
And moving the April files out of the way did indeed solve the problem.
