After lengthy discussions, the "official" answer about this problem
was given in

(Note that the vte.info mentioned there no longer exists in the
unstable tree; the one in stable still has the PatchScript).
The workaround is to copy the PatchScript from gnome/vte.info into the
.info file you are working on. This should cure the problem.
Where is this file/how to I get it? Can you please briefly outline
the steps to get the source unpacked & ready to install, modify
the .info, and then proceed?
