Exactly - I tried that too. What worked best for me is to put the
following at the end of my .xinitrc file:
quartz-wm --only-proxy&
exec icewm

So I'm still using quartz-wm this way to retain copy and paste
cpabilties wrt. Aqua. But the imagemagick window problem is fixed because
of icewm.
There's no particular need to choose icewm over others, except that it's
the only one for which I can reliably bring my Xwindow screens to the
front by simply clicking on the title bar. With other window managers,
there is this apparently well-known problem that X11 windows stay hidden
behind Aqua windows when clicked on...
