Sounds like something's hosed in the profile.d script from the
xdg-base package. Maybe different "sed" versions? Anyway, I just
committed xdg-base-0.6-2; try updating that, then seeing if the
reported problem goes away.

Brute-force solution if you get stuck in shell-startup hell is to 
  sudo rm /sw/etc/profile.d/xdg-base.sh
Not having that file will break some gnome stuff (including possibly
installation of shared-mime-info) but if the presence of that file is
causing more basic problem gotta get that resolved first.

If you still have problems with xdg-base-0.6-2, please let me know the
contents of xdg-base.sh and what (if any) fink "sed" package you have
installed.
