It may be something to do with the new version of hdf. Downgrading to
4.2r0-3 should get you a working GDL, though I haven't played around
to see what breaks when hdf is updated again.

I don't really need a working GDL since I'm just testing to see if it
builds and installs.
I looked at the config.log and couldn't make any sense out of it. It
isn't very long though and I've placed it here:

This was caused by the szip support I added in 4.2r1. I just removed it
in CVS.
