I found the same thing with a black-and-white TIFF. With a color TIFF
I was able to get _something_, but the color map was way off. Also,
the previews for TIFFs don't seem to work correctly, either.
By converting the images to JPEG (I used ImageMagick), I was able to
have the show up correctly. Here's a screen grab from Scribus.app.

I have not been able to reproduce the problem with the missing icons,
but using your screenshot as an example of a tiff file, I see that the
colors are definitely out of whack, it looks like M and K are missing
from CMYK. I haven't followed the recent changes on scribus CVS, it may
be that this is already fixed there. OTOH, tiffs are notorious for
posing problems in other applications, too; the standard seems not
precise enough. For example, the console log gives me a couple of dozens of
/Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari: TIFFReadDirectory: tiff
data provider: Seek error accessing TIFF directory.\n
when I look at your screenshot in Safari.
