I am a happy Fink user, and have been for more than 5 years now. The
project is great, works well (rarely experiencde a problem with
compiling, which is not the case with Darwinports), but I have to
admit that something is recurrently bugging me: dependencies.
I sometimes experience that some Fink packages are built with too
many dependencies. For instance, cdrdao. When using unstable Fink,
here is what I have to install on my system:
The following 40 additional packages will be installed:
audiofile audiofile-bin audiofile-shlibs automake1.8 docbook-utils
esound esound-bin esound-common esound-shlibs gd2-shlibs
gettext-dev ghostscript ghostscript-fonts gtk+ gtk+-data gtk+-shlibs
jadetex lame-dev lame-shlibs libao2 libao2-shlibs
libkpathsea4-shlibs libmad libmad-shlibs libogg libogg-shlibs
libsndfile0-dev libsndfile0-shlibs libvorbis0 libvorbis0-shlibs
libwww-bin libwww-shlibs mpg123 openmotif3-shlibs opensp4 pccts sgmls-
pm t1lib5-shlibs tetex-base tetex-texmf
(notice: tetex-base tetex-texmf, which are simply huge - and this is
to build docs I won't read, or will look for on the net)
When using the stable version (which should have a precompiled
binary), I still get the following list of deps:
audiofile audiofile-bin audiofile-shlibs esound esound-bin esound-
common esound-shlibs gettext gettext-dev gtk+ gtk+-data
gtk+-shlibs lame lame-dev lame-shlibs libogg libogg-shlibs mpg123 pccts
Here, having to install esound and gtk+ seems to me a bit too much.
So my question is: are other using having the same feel that some
Fink package have too many dependencies ? In my case, the only
solution is to compile the package by hand, or create a custom "fat-
free" portfile.
