This is an understandable feeling, but it seems to me you are picking the wrong object here: cdrdao has a particularly lean dependency list:

BuildDepends: pccts, lame-dev, libao2, libmad, libvorbis0, libogg, pkgconfig
Depends: libmad-shlibs, libogg-shlibs, libao2-shlibs, libvorbis0-shlibs, lame-shlibs

I don't think that by building by hand you can get any leaner than this. The huge dependency list that you are seeing must be pulled in indirectly through one of those dependencies.
