Was there ever a fix implemented for the iTunes 7.0.4 problem on Panther?

It's a different subject, but yes, there was (assuming you mean QuickTime 7.0.4; if you really mean iTunes, then please disregard this message). I haven't seen it published, and I don't know if it went into the latest Panther updates. (Alex, is there a /usr/bin/ld in the latest updates?).

Here it goes:

If you copy the /usr/bin/ld from Tiger to Panther, the problem goes away, that is, the two errors related to QuickTime 7.0.4 that we observed don't appear. No idea why this is works, but it does.

Anyway, you don't have to copy from a Tiger machine to Panther, you can also install the SDK package MacOSX10.4.0.pkg (not the universal one!) from the ADC site. It is meant for Tiger, but it contains a file /usr/bin/ld10.3 which it does not even install on Tiger. On Panther, it installs this file as /usr/bin/ld, overwriting the original one (there is some weird code in the postflight script to do this). And this /usr/bin/ld avoids the QuickTime errors!

This is a crazy story - only privately indicated to me by Apple bugfixers in connection with my bug report - but true.

Short abstract: If you installed the QuickTime 7.0.4 update on Panther, install also the 10.4.0 SDK for Tiger.
