from my second attempt to do the installation of gcc4 om my G4 laptop yesterday evening (it failed the same way as on the first attempt, which I reported in my earlier email).

No problems occured on a dual G5 machine when I updated that yesterday. I'll see if I can try this on another G4 machine later. The Tiger system on the "failing" G4 was installed by someone else, so I feel tempted to reinstall 10.4 if this bus error only happens on that computer... but it would be nice if I could first get a clue of what's wrong.
