What do you think of the idea to basically remove all packages and start
fresh (So far, svn was the only package that I installed with fink)?

If you think that might be good, how would I go about it?

"fink remove *"?

Are there any packages that are installed together with fink itself that
fink relies upon and that I shouldn't remove?
