There was a bad xfree86-shlibs a while back that could overwrite externally-installed X11s. This looks like the case for you: you shouldn't have both xfree86-shlibs and system-xfree86. Or, if you installed Apple's X11 over a Fink xfree86 setup, that can cause the same problem. You can straighten out your system via the command given in: http://fink.sourceforge.net/faq/usage-packages.php#special-x11-debug Then you can install whatever X11 you want. With any luck, if you've been using Apple's X11 before, you won't require any rebuilding--that would presume that your xfree86-shlibs didn't constitute a real installation. If you want to use xfree86 or xorg that's fine too--definitely no rebuild of anything. -- Alexander K.
