I see according to the FAQ #Q5 33: "I can't install Fink via the Installer
package, because I get "volume doesn't support symlinks" errors."
And the FAQ says to log in as a user who has administrative permissions...
but I DO have administrative permissions.
My account is the primary admin account on my mac.
