Using exec gnome-panel along with exec Metacity took care of the
rootless problem. Using Martin Costabel's workaround that Stan sent
me, I fixed my keymap problem. When I started up GNOME, I got the
following messages:
The panel encountered a problem while loading
"OAFIID:GNOME_WindowListApplet". Do you want to delete the applet from
your configuration?
I got similar windows and messages for Window Selector and Workspace
Switcher. Needless to say, these applets did not load. I said I did
not want to delete these apps from configuration, so the warning
windows would close. I went to add these apps to one of the panels,
and I was initially able to add the window list app. But then when I
tried to add regular apps to a launcher on a panel, gnome froze, and I
was forced to close down the X11 system from Apple's X11 menubar.
Now, when I load GNOME, I still get the same loading failure messages
for the above applets, and I can not load
WindowListApplet separately. Also, I can not logout my user from
GNOME like I could before it froze up.
