I removed much of GNOME, and reinstalled it from the compiled .deb
files thinking that possibly I have some configuration problem
besides .gconfd and .gnome2, but the behavior is still the same. None
of the applets: WindowList, WindowSelector, or Workspace Switcher will
load.

I also tried the workaround for the keymap again, because my keymap
was bad again (because of the reinstall?). The regular workaround
would not work. When I executed the gnome-settings-daemon instead
of getting the pop-up menu to choose Xmodmap, it reads the xrdb file
after telling me xscreensaver was not compiled with locking and then
hangs. I don't know why I don't get the original behavior that i got
the first time I set Xmodmap. Finally, out of frustration I used
Martin's dirty workaround and just trashed the /sw/share/xmodmap
directory. Now I don't have the keymap problem.

However, I notice now that I can not get any help or other Gnome
documentation to load. In fact, I don't see Gnome documentation of
any kind on the pop-up menus in the Gnome Menu app. When I try to
launch a help file I get the following message:

There was an error displaying help: There was an error launching the
default action command associated with this location.

Does anyone have any idea what has been broken with help? I could
just rebuild Gnome if I have to. It mostly worked except for the
Window applets and the keymap originally. I like to avoid rebuilding
the whole thing if I can, because I believe most of the installation
is probably fine.
