In case someone else also comes across this problem, here is the  
solution:

start gnucash using the "--nofile" option.

The problem was that gnucash was trying to open files from a  
directory, that I had moved to a different location. It wanted to  
display an alert to that effect. The alert was displayed behind the  
splash screen and was waiting for input.

PS: FWIW, Gnucash project now has DMG files. Just downloaded and  
installed 2.3.5 DMG, and it works great. Looks much better too.
