Martin- On the PPC 10.5.8 machine- I was unable to update scipy-core-py25 directly through fink, and when attempting to install numpy-py26-1.3.0.7 using apt-get gave me the same warning about deleting my gnome installation. Using sudo dpkg -r --force-all scipy-core-py26 and following it by fink install scipy-core-py26 as you suggested was successful. All packages now have been successfully updated. Thank you very much!
