Alex, this is outdated wisdom, at least three years old. Texlive, while 
not static, is now very stable in its structure.

I think Fink really needs a system-texlive package. This is not a 
trivial package to do, because it has to Provide a lot of other things, 
and all of these have to be tested. There was one on the submissions 
tracker in 2007 which was not quite up to its task, but it was rejected 
a little too light-handedly, IMHO.
