If 'gnome' is the script you showed earlier, which is supposed to run
gnome-session, you might want _not_ to use that to start X, but use
'startx' or some X application instead.  It probably _should_ work, but
when I use my gnome-session script I get some additional error pop-up
messages.

After looking more carefully, I realized that I was also seeing your
issue.  It's possible that the behavior of gnome-session has changed
_again_ and one has to run metacity before running gnome-session.  If
you include

metacity &

on the line before you call 'gnome-session' in your script, that ought
to do the job.

Also, if you modify /sw/bin/xinitrc.sh, and change 'x_prefix' to be
/opt/X11, that may suffice to point the startup stuff to your Xquartz
tree.  You may want to modify your /sw/etc/xinitrc-last-hook to look in
/opt/X11 as well (I assume that that tree contains a 98-user.sh in an
analogous location).
