I forgot to mention that there is an unofficial (though not comprehensive) binary distribution hosted by one of our package maintainers for 10.5 and 10.6 which focuses on packages needed for scientific work, including gcc44 and 45: http://finkers.wordpress.com/2009/06/01/fink-and-binary-distributions/ What "unofficial" means here is that the Fink Project can and will do nothing about server outages.
