Thanks very much for the quick response.  I will definitely try this out.  
Maybe the above link (along with a big warning) could be added to the fink 
Download page,

        http://www.finkproject.org/download/index.php?phpLang=en

and the fact that the binary distribution for 10.6 is not available due to a 
lack of resources could be added to the FAQ?  I certainly found a couple of 
people asking the question when I googled, but I didn't find any replies.
