We had a report from someone on IRC about a similar problem--I don't
recall whether a specific package was mentioned or not.

In this case, the issue was resolved for them by _not_ invoking fink as
root, and instead letting fink get its own root access.

Are you invoking fink as root?  If so, what method are you using to get
root access?
