One potential source of problems under Fink is if one is using a non-default build directory without the ".build" in its name to hide it from Spotlight (that's why the the default option is /sw/src/fink.build), though "fink configure" will warn you if you try to do something like that. The frequent additions, removals, and changes of files performed in building multiple packages will definitely cause a lot of Spotlight activity.
