    thanks a lot for your help. Although after upgrading from OS 10.6 to 10.9 I reinstalled both XCode and the CL-tools, there were still an old version of Xcode residing in /Developer. After deleting these directories, fink installed libsndfile1 without further problems.

I've seen this happen before and it seems to be caused by having an older Xcode installed and then updating to 10.9. Did you reinstall Xcode 5 after updating to 10.9? You might still have 10.8's Xcode 5 installed which is not compatible with 10.9. Or you might have reinstalled Xcode but still have the 10.8 command line tools. You have some mixture of 10.8 and 10.9 headers.
