Thanks Kevin and Alexander, I think the reinstall did the trick. As an aside, I don't know what I would do ... well, I do know what I would be doing, spending hours downloading and installing prerequisites! ... without fink. Installing vim pulled in 106 other packages. It's happily downloading them now and I don't have to do anything! Thanks!
