Dear Hanspeter, Alexander and other fink users, here is a summary of my problems and solutions for installing kde and running kate:
I succeeded to build kde on 10.7 with Hanspeter's instructions. I also succeeded on 10.9 without any problems. I succeeded to install kate4-mac, and then ran it from the finder, clicking here: /sw/Applications/KDE4/kate.app On both systems it complained about missing components. I then went through everything which has to do with kate on the fink server, and installed everything. Now I can run kate.app on both systems. It seems some requirements for kate4-mac are missing. Then in both cases, when I try to open a file, I get the error message Could not start process Cannot talk to klauncher: The name org.kde.klauncher was not provided by any .service files There is actually nothing seemingly related in launched. Despite going through various webpages on how to set up kde, I could not solve the problem. Then I double-clicked on kde4.app and kdeinit4.app, and now kate opens files for me! I think it would be good to add on the fink website, maybe when one searches for any kde program, a link to "how to set up kde after installation", or, even better, to put somewhere in the kde installation script an automatic call to the initialisation program. My success was based on shear luck.
