Using LinearLUSolver seems to get rid of the problem.

If you didn't consciously install Trilinos (and you wouldn't soon
forget the experience), then yes, you are using PySparse.

To clarify, you are using scramble() and it still gives you a
MemoryError?

There is a gc module in the standard Python library, but you should
not need to use it explicitly. If you are using scramble(), then
what I was worrying about is not even an issue.
