Do you have very old Fire files around?  They could be causing problems.

Quit the app.

open up a terminal window and do the following

 >  defaults delete Fire
 > mv ~/Library/Fire ~/Library/Fire.old
 > mv ~/Library/Application\ Support/Fire ~/Library/Application\ 
Support/Fire.old

Then restart the app.
