I see your points, but believe that many users do want an indicator of
running services.

Absolutely. The only performance hit as it is now, is the loading of the
appearance control panel which will contain an additional two checkboxes. I
haven't absolutely made sure there isn't a performance hit now compared to
the solution with the user status badge, but there will not be any when I'm
done anyway. The feature will also (like the num-users badge) be turned off
per default.
