Below are exerts from deep within each client's official Homepage. Lines
with a "*" in front are from two 3rd party clients who have found a way
around the length issue.

AIM IM Server limits outgoing message to 2048 bytes but the command
length must be taken into account so a users message should be closer to
2000 bytes to be safe. (Server/Client-side)

MSN messages can be up to 400 characters in length. (Server-side)

ICQ Has no message size limit unless your sending an offline message, in
which case it is limited to 450 characters.

Jabber, by default, has no message size limit unless (in what seems like
rare cases) otherwise specified by the server's config.

Yahoo messages can be up to 1260 bytes in size (I'm guessing closer to
1200 bytes would be safer based on AOL's figures). (Server-side)

When you use Yahoo! Messenger (or any messenger) for SMS you have to
limit the size of your text message size to 160 characters. This is the
standard length allowed for all SMS messages.

*Because many devices only support messages of up to 160 characters,
some clients can choose to have large messages broken up into multiple
messages.

*Send Messages of Any Length -- PageNOW Defeats the
characters-per-message limit (imposed by the paging service) by
splitting long messages into a series of smaller pages.

Hope this helps.

Brad

P.S. Will any of this affect Fire's ability to send & receive PGP keys?
